Wednesday 9th June 2010 - Evening in Capetown

Had our first night out in Capetown tonight. Still jet-lagged but figured the best way to beat it is push through & crash tonight.

After meeting a couple of english lads [Lee - mad Sunderland supporter & Paul] as we were leaving the Hotel, we took a walk down the waterfront - popular location for pubs & bars [alah southbank] & ended up at the something "Brewery". Place is run by Ahid - half kurdish half sth african. Seems everyone here is half something or other.

Anyway was a big night of fun & drinking [pommies can drink] & loads of football followers. Urugayans are everywhere & they make a lot of noise [especially with their Vuvuzellas - more about that another time] & yet the Brazilians with all their success still remain humble - what a great bunch of blokes.

Even the yanks are having a go. Met two couples Scott & jessica & Raven & Lauren who hail from Alabama - you gotta love the deep southern accents. Mates from college now football tragics - who would have thought even the US of A would finally submit to the round ball - in fact the US have assembled the largest fan base of any nation here [Such grandstanders......] - Aust is 3rd though - Aussie Oi.

Not to be outdone though the Aussies were huge - George & his mates [also part of the fanatics tour] & then Bill & Todd [father & son who we met on the plane] who are Perth boys but know their football stuff [Todd in red t-shirt & his dad Bill is the distinguished silver-haired man -he'd hate me for saying that].

As a football lover it is a dream come true to be surrounded by so many international football fans all having a blast - even though they all reckon they will be world cup winners.

Next stop on Friday arvo our time will be the Uruguay v France game & we are planning to meet up with the Uruguayans before the game & make the march to the game together - should be huge.

By the way everyone seems to agree on one thing - they all hate the French [Thiery Henry's hand of frog incidcent that put Ireland out still lingers]. The fella in the green Ireland top held a protest in the pub & got all persons to simultaneously declare their detest of the french - & he got a lot of numbers - great to see football passion is alive & well.

Would be remiss of me not to mention Franswa [thats how u say it] who was our waiter for the night & made sure our glasses were never dry & that our bellies got some tucker. He is the young lad in the black vest with Sash & I. He is a mad rugby man though he is trying to embrace the round ball game like many here.

By the way the Sth African team is known as Bafana Bafana [look it up] & the locals are extraordinarily confident [the mexicans we met were not so convinced, they meet in the opening match in Joburg tomorrow.

Chat soon bye
