Day 5 – Sunday 13th June [Germ v Aust]

Well not the greatest day for us as Aussies. Sash & I made our way to Long Street again as we have decided to watch the game at the Dubliner again [the Irish Pub]. Before stopping at the Dubliner we take in a pint at a nearby pub - spreading our cheer to more than one local establishment seems like the right thing to do. We actually met the owners Andre & Nadine who exchanged some entertaining banter with us & then presented us with our first Vuvuzela - which we are about to put to effective use [in more ways than one].
Its time to say goodbye to Andre & Nadine, thank them for more of the South African hospitality that appears to have no limit - at least in Capetown.
At the Dubliner the place is quickly getting packed with supporters - the germans are out in force proudly waving their flags. The Aussies are a little sparse but they are in good voice - no matter, Sash & I will make up for any deficiency.
The Aussies have named a strange line-up with Tim Cahill as lone striker [never played this way before] & Garcia in the middle. Our struggle point appears to be in defence with Lucas Neil, Craig Moore in the centre of defence. Whilst it appears experienced they are slow.
Well the game unfortunately goes pear-shape alsmost immediately. Australia has a great chance in the first 4 minutes but fails to score & then after that its curtains. Podolski scored a blinder first followed by a header goal from Klose [he should have been cleaned up by Schwartzer - it would have been legal]. At 2-0 the game is clearly getting away from us. Germany finished 4-0 winnersbut could realistically have bagged 7 - we have a real speed problem in defence.
Tim Cahill was straightred-carded for a very soft foul which infuriated Sash & he began to swear the house down - he could be heard right throughout the Pub. Big problem for the Aussies is that Tim Cahill will miss the Aust v Ghana game [a must win for the Aussies].
Well we may have lost the game, but Sash & I did Austalia proud - we supported with vigor 7 passion & then showed all the German, Aussie & neutral supporters that you can still enjoy the beautiful game & the party atmosphere regardless of results - if war & politics are the great dividers, then world cup football truly is the great uniter - OLE.
A special mention to our two new Israeli friends Naama &Yoav, who as neutrals helped by joining us as adopted Australian supporters & cheered very loudly - Thankyou.

  1. Obviously you have not been able to provide sufficient support to our hard playing socceroos.
Can you please just cheer a little louder. I know you are a couple of wilting lillies siiting quiety in your seats but please make yourselves heard. Let them know you are there. And don't use the vuvuzelas as an excuse.
