Day 9 – Thursday 17th June [Greece v Nigeria]

It’s our third day in Durban & we are getting a little more acquainted with the surroundings. I went out for a run again this morning – so nice to be able to run in June & not freeze. Doing a little catch-up on blog [as you will notice] while Sash goes to fight on our behalf at the FIFA ticket centre, We have paid premium price for what are classified category 1 seats, yet we actually are sitting way up in the stands [like the top level at MCG & way back] – anyway good luck Sash.
We actually meet at the beach for breakfast together [actually slightly early lunch – you see time is irrelevant here]. Sash shares the bad news as FIFA have told him “huh, whatyoutalkinabout”. No dice so we will have to scam better seats if we spot vacant areas.
Today we have 1 significant game to watch – Greece v Nigeria. I am kitted out in my Greek garb & I am planning to support with strong passion. We go to the same Cuban bar we were at last night. We had a good time yesterday so happy to do it again. We get pole position seats & settle in. Sash makes a good call & gets us in the mood by ordering something off the menu [Feta, Olives & Ciabata toasted with olive oil] – we are indulging in Greek appetisers again before the main dish – Nigeria on a platter.
Peroni on tap is the beer of choice & we order by the pint – we are doing our bit for Greece. The game turns out to be a ripper for me. Although Nigeria go one goal up early, a Nigerian player is straight red-carded for kicking a Greek [seems everyone wants to kick a Greek]. With a one player advantage Greece dominate the remainder of the game with almost 30 shots at goal [to about 10]. The continued forward pressure [well done lads] pays off & we win the game 2-1. It is landmark day for Greek football at world cup level – our first goal, our first point, our first win – Zito Ellada [Life to Greece]. I have not had the good fortune of supporting Greece like that since 2004 & it felt awesome – I feel like such a wog at the moment.
Had an interesting encounter with a fella named Jim [guy with his fist in the air] who is an Aussie now living abroad. He works for the UN [specifically with UNICEF} &has been placed in areas like Angola, & Sri Lanka. In that moment I felt inspired & envious simultaneously - I so want to do what he does – life fulfilling.
Tonight we stay on Florida Street [the main street in Durban for restaurants & bars]. We have dinner at an Italian place & befriend a bartender named Bradley. He looks after us so well [he is the guy in the beanie].Food is awesome but look out for the green pesto – it was bloody chilli [mouthful killed]. We met Chris & John, a couple of young Aussie guys travelling with the fanatics. Aussie supporters are everywhere especially in Durban where so many are based.
We finish the night watching the France v Mexico game at a place named Taco Zulu [basically restaurant/bar]. Once again the place is dominated by Aussies & we meet a group of them including Josh, Brendan & Dion – check the group shot. Brendan [guy on left in group shot] in fact is on his honeymoon – check this out he is on his honeymoon with Chloe yet they are not married yet. They just figured that as their wedding date was fixed & that FIFA were not about to shift the world cup, why not take the honeymoon early – the bargaining chip for Chloe was a further 5 weeks in Africa. By the way Mexico beats France 2-0 – goodbye Frogs.
We are set to head to another place but things go a little pear-shaped. Sash & I have our first fall-out, like any couple, we sleep on it (in separate beds off-course), have morning sex and make up!!! We will complete our celebrations of Greece's inaugral World Cup victory tonight...........beware the Durbanites!!
