Day 4 - Saturday 12th June [Greece v Korea & England v USA]

Another huge day of football, fans & fluid.
All began at the ANAT restaurant beer garden about 11.30am as we prepared for Greece v Korea. To get in the mood we took in a little european beers, feta, olives & bread - as you would for a greek & a macedonian.
We sat at the waterfront Ampitheatre to watch the first half of what was a painful exhibition by my compatriots [down 1-0].
We met Tony at the restaurant [waiter - getting to know a lot of these guys], who is a sth african born greek, who not only talked us into changing location for the second half, he drove us there "the Capetown Hellenic Club" - suddenly I was surrounded by greeks everywhere -what a great bloke - in fact most all of the locals we have met [& thats quite a few] have been awesome.
Anyway the Hellenic Club did not help the greek team - they lost 2-0, but the souvlaki was special.
Picked up a tourist on our way from the hellenic club into town [George from Strathmore - shit you travel 10,000 miles to meet a bloke who lives 15 minutes away- go figure].
We also met more local sth african born greeks at the club - special mention to Dimitri & Kaliopi - its funny but even though we live in different countries & speak with varying english accents, when we speak greek we sound the same - go figure.
Took the long & slow walk from the Hellenic Club to the City Centre & as we have done all along we picked up more strays, this time sth sfrican locals Sandton, Derrick & Wiseman - we stop for a beer together & exchange a few life stories - Derrick is very entertaining & did an incredible job of outtalking me - & for those who know me that is special.
We finally make it to the city centre & so tonight we are zeroing in on an Irish Pub recommended to us by a couple of Yanks [the Dubliner] where we will take in England v USA.
In short the game was entertaining puntured by an English Goalkeeping mistake finishing [1-1], but the real entertainment was provided by the English fans USA fans giving stick to one another - the british were gold though because they deliver their insults through chants - such as when the USA team went up on screen - it was greeted with repeated choruses of "Who are you, Who are you" - but my favorite was reserved for another country [& it went a little like this

there were 10 German Bombers in the air, there were 10 German bombers in the air, there were 10 German Bombers, 10 German Bombers, there were 10 German Bombers in the air, & the English RAF they shot one down, & the English RAF they shot one down, & the English RAF, the English RAF, the English RAF they shot one down, now there are 9 German Bombers in the air......... & so on...........its given some great ideas for tomorrows Aust v Germany game].
Once again we met some rip[ping blokes from Pete the british rugby player [bloke in red shirt] to the British & US boys we spent most of the night with in Chant [ see group picks].
Without doubt Health & Safety Regs do not exist in Sth Africa as there were clearly 10x more people in their than should have been & you literally could not move - a toilet trip [20 metres] took 15 minutes.
Anyway a huge night with a two-piece band picking up where the game left off & belting out rock anthems until the wee hours of the morning - classic football rock night.
Time for some much needed rest to prepare for Germ v Aust tomorrow night.
